Position Summary
We are hiring a senior DBA to own the performance, reliability and design of our SQL Server estate on Azure. You will tune slow workloads, help engineers design sound schemas, and run the high availability and disaster recovery setup that keeps our data online. This is a hands-on role for someone who has run production SQL Server at scale and enjoys being the go-to expert for the team.
Key Responsibilities
Performance Tuning:
Find and fix slow queries using execution plans, Query Store, Extended Events and DMVs
Design and maintain indexing strategies, statistics and maintenance jobs
Diagnose blocking, deadlocks, wait stats, tempdb contention and parameter sniffing issues
Right-size Azure compute and storage tiers based on workload data and cost
Schema Design and Data Modeling:
Partner with developers to design normalized, scalable schemas for new features
Review T-SQL, stored procedures and schema changes before they reach production
Plan partitioning, archiving and data lifecycle strategies for large tables
High Availability and Disaster Recovery:
Build and manage Always On Availability Groups and failover cluster instances
Support database mirroring and log shipping on legacy systems, and plan their migration to Availability Groups
Configure Azure SQL active geo-replication and auto-failover groups
Own backup and restore strategy, including point-in-time recovery, and run regular DR tests
Operations and Security:
Administer SQL Server on Azure VMs, Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure SQL Database
Set up monitoring and alerting with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and SQL Insights
Manage logins, roles, Microsoft Entra ID authentication, TDE, Always Encrypted and auditing
Apply patches, cumulative updates and version upgrades with minimal downtime
Lead migrations from on-premises SQL Server to Azure using DMS and related tools
Automate routine work with PowerShell, dbatools and Azure CLI
Take part in an on-call rotation and lead root-cause analysis after incidents
Mentor junior DBAs and developers on SQL Server best practices
Required Qualifications
7+ years as a SQL Server DBA, including 3+ years supporting production workloads in Azure
Deep experience with SQL Server 2016 through 2022
Hands-on with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and SQL Server on Azure VMs
Proven track record tuning queries, indexes and server configuration on high-volume OLTP systems
Strong data modeling skills: normalization, keys, constraints and when to denormalize
Built and supported Always On Availability Groups, mirroring, log shipping and failover clustering
Expert T-SQL; able to read and rewrite complex queries and stored procedures
Scripting with PowerShell for automation
Solid grasp of backup, restore and recovery models, with real DR testing experience
Working knowledge of Azure networking, storage and identity as they affect databases
Preferred Qualifications
Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300)
Infrastructure as code with Bicep, ARM templates or Terraform
Database CI/CD using SSDT, DACPACs, Flyway or Azure DevOps / GitHub Actions pipelines
Experience with SSIS, Azure Data Factory or other ETL tooling
Exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Synapse or Power BI data sources
Familiarity with PostgreSQL or Cosmos DB
Background in regulated environments such as SOC 2, HIPAA or PCI DSS
How You Work
You explain database trade-offs clearly to developers and non-technical stakeholders
You stay calm and methodical during production incidents
You write runbooks and documentation others can follow
You push back on risky designs with data, not opinion
